The Calumet Stewardship Initiative (CSI) is a coalition of organizations that advocate for the Calumet region that runs along the Lake Michigan shore from southeast Chicago to the Indiana/Michigan border. CSI seeks to improve the region’s natural environment and quality of life through volunteer activities, environmental education and research, and advocacy for green infrastructure.
The coalition's previous website was static HTML and did not fully support CSI's mission and programming.
SmartCause Digital custom built a new Drupal-based website for CSI, including a custom, responsive design and layout. This was a concept to completion project that included discovery, site map, wireframes, design, development, content transfer, launch and training.
We worked directly with CSI’s steering and communications committee through complex conversations to determine the site’s primary goal and target audiences. We also provided extended support for CSI's project leaders to understand some of the technical decisions and their implications, such as choosing a webhost and determining how a specific function should work to be effective and easy to maintain. We held an on-site Drupal website training session for CSI committee members to allow them to practice editing and updating the website using the content management system.
CSI's new website educates residents about the Calumet region and opportunities to participate in CSI activities. It is easy to maintain for the coalition, whose leadership and capacity change over time. The site features recent updates, upcoming events and compelling images and maps. The events and member organization lists are dynamicaly displayed and work together to create a helpful calendar feature. The site also includes a robust permissions system which allows all CSI committee members and partner organizations to participate in posting content on the website at the appropriate level.
